Functional characterization of ferric-chelate reductases in rice and Arabidopsis

Ferric-chelate reductases of plants are key enzymes involving in iron uptake from soil, metabolism and storage in plants. Rice and Arabidopsis are two model plants for molecular biology research in dicots and monocots. In this proposal, we will isolate all ferric-chelate reductase genes from genomes of rice and Arabidopsis and characterize their biological functions using forward and reverse genetics as well with biochemical methods. The research results will provide useful scientific knowledge and genes for designation and breeding of new cultivars which are iron-efficient and accumulated more iron in seeds
